Navigating ICD - 10

Introduction:

ICD - 10 replaces ICD - 9 on October 1, 2015.  No ICD - 9 codes will be accepted after that date.  A survey conducted by Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) June 2015 demonstrated 50% of hospitals and 17% of physician practices had conducted ICD 10 diagnosis and procedure code testing.  Only 6% of primary care physicians have participated in testing.  The lack of preparedness reflects the inadequate buy-in from physicians who believe it is a useless transition that will result in the collection of large volumes of data that will eventually be used against them. (Healthcare Informatics 4/15)     Two things are clear.  First,  ICD - 10 is here to stay and will be the rule of law on Oct 1, 2015.  Second, physicians don’t understand the what, why and how to of the new system.  The goal of this CME course is to fill in the blanks of ICD - 10.  We deal with the practical issues:

  • What is ICD - 10?
  • How will it affect patient outcomes?
  • How will it affect physician productivity?
  • The why, what and how will it be used for data collection?
  • How to code using your EHR or mobile apps?
  • How to make sure you being paid correctly?

It is not too late to catch up.  Testing is allowed until Oct. 1.  Your ability to maintain your revenue cycle begins with an acceptance of what has already been decided.  This course will help with that acceptance and then discuss what needs to be done to prepare.
